Class #1 invites you to experience “Deco Twisting with Balloon Beads”, featuring award-winning, master balloon artist, Ken Stillman. This highly informative and entertaining class will change the way you create decor forever! Imagine the possibilities! Imagine changing a balloon into a bead! Imagine a stack of balloons holding up a table! Imagine large balloon characters supporting solid objects! Imagine concealing electrical cords, pipes, and other structures within the balloons themselves! All of these concepts and much more will be revealed in this class. Amaze your current and future clients! You cannot afford to miss this extremely rare opportunity.

But wait! There’s more!

Class #2

“Twisting Techniques”, Ken will show some of his newest concepts for line twisting. His focus will be on colossal figures that can be completed in three minutes or less! He will also reveal his lightning-fast horse that takes less than 60 seconds from start to finish! In addition, he will be sharing one of his newest creations, “Bubble Heads”. These impressive designs are not for line twisting and may take a little more time, but they are attention-grabbers that will outshine and blow away your competition!

Ken Stillman’s tour is coming here!

Photo from the Brenion JamThanks to everyone who came out to twist with David Brenion last month. It was a blast — he basically held court and showed us some super simple designs and some crazy innovative things that made the balloons scream out in pain. It was fun!

There’s a lot going on at Fantasma for the summer so we’re not having a balloon jam there until September. But don’t worry, we have the solution to your balloon twisting jones:

Ken Stillman is touring the country and will be in the area on September 2nd. The details are being hashed out right now, but it looks like he’ll teach two classes at Tricky Business in Long Island. That’s where we had one of Don Caldwell’s farewell classes, and it was a great space. One of the classes will be on decor (or big) items, and other on twisted pieces to make at gigs. I’ll keep you posted via email, FB, etc. when we know what’s happening. Some newer twisters might not know who Ken Stillman is — trust me, he’s a living legend. His list of innovations and accomplishments is staggering.

That’s it for now. Feel free to post your news and fun links on so everyone can see them.

p.s. don’t leave your balloons outside this month. I have a bag of geos that are fused together. And they smell bad.

Don Caldwell’s farewell lecture tour, aka, NYC Workshops

Inflatable Titans (photo by Ken Merfeld)

Don Caldwell, aka, Buster Balloon, comes into New York every few months for some fabulous event, such as his own art gallery show, a super-fancy gig, or to consult with artists like Jeff Koons. This summer is the first time that he is coming to town just to teach and share his world-renowned balloon art with us.  This is actually a farewell tour, so this is your last chance to go to a Don Caldwell lecture.  Three workshops are schedule, one in Manhattan, one in Long Island, and one in New Jersey.  Here’s the schedule:

January 2011 balloon jam news

INSIDE:  Jams | Conventions | TV Shows | Law Suits

There is A LOT happening in our little balloon twisting world, so let’s get right into the good stuff:

First, we are setting the dates for this year’s balloon jams and I do not want to conflict with any other events.  Can you PLEASE email me potential conflicts?  I want to know about things like SAM/IBM meetings, Downtown Clown’s schedule, other jams and conventions, and pretty much anything else that you might go to instead of a balloon jam.

The next jam is tentatively scheduled for Monday, February 28th.  Does that conflict with anything in your calendar?

Second, the annual big balloon twisting convention, Twist & Shout, is within driving distance of NYC this year.  This is a big deal, because the convention will not be back on the East Coast for at least three more years, and may never come back to this part of the country.  So please please please come this year.  It’s pretty cheap (~$200) and the best twisters in the world will be there teaching, demoing, competing, and hanging out.  It’s the best way to learn everything there is about balloon twisting super fast.  Pre-register at  I am sure that there will be people driving from NYC.  The convention starts Feb 16th, so register NOW.

Third is the new balloon twisting TV Show!  The Unpoppables will be debuting February 7th on TLC and showcases a team of balloon twisters in LA making awesome balloons for a variety of clients.  This is the kind of publicity that makes everyone want what we do.  Two of the artists on the team are from our area and you’ve met them at our NY Twisters jams! This first season is pretty short, so be sure to watch and support the episodes so the show is renewed.  Watch the tree trailers here:

The fourth news item is a really odd one.  A little company making balloon doggie bookends is being sued by famous artist Jeff Koons for selling a sculpture with a balloon dog.  Koons makes the famous huge metal balloon sculptures and the smaller collectible plates.  Do you think that Koons “owns” the rights to balloon doggies?  Hilarious ….

Read the Times article about it:

Also, check out the bookends online.  They are adorable.  Our friend Funnybone is selling a pair on ebay.  It’s item #330521087110.

That’s alot for one email.  Please email me your potential conflicts, and I’ll see you at Twist & Shout.
